SURF Risk factor audit

SUrvey of Risk Factors

A Clinical Audit to Record and Monitor Cardiovascular Diseases

SURF is an international clinical audit that aims to simplify the recording and management of cardiovascular risk factors in routine cardiology clinics for patients with established coronary heart disease. A welcome initiative by University Medical Centre Utrecht and Trinity College Dublin in collaboration with the European Society of Cardiology.

Research

In the SURF CHD pilot and Phase I studies, we observed patchy recording and poor management of risk factors in CHD patients with substantial regional variations. Female patients, those younger than 55 years old, those with diabetes and those who did not have the opportunity to participate in cardiac rehabilitation were more likely to have uncontrolled risk factors.

SURF CHD findings call for judicious and validated approaches to the development and implementation of clinical standards, operating procedures and performance measures. A gauntlet we take up within SURF CHD II.
